Dan Salstein is currently an Associate General Counsel at NFS Capital Dan is a quick learner, strong communicator, and a team player—making it no surprise that he is a valuable member of the NFS team. Dan joined NFS as Associate Counsel in August 2018, focusing on management of NFS’ litigation in Massachusetts, and overseeing all out-of-state matters handled by outside attorneys.
Within a short period of time, Dan demonstrated his ability and ambition to take on additional responsibilities with respect to the transactional side of NFS’ business. In 2020, NFS’ Vice President/General Counsel went on parental leave, and Dan stepped up to provide all legal services to meet the Company’s needs and to maintain continuity. Dan turned this challenge into an opportunity by quickly stepping into the Company’s different legal and transactional demands, learning on the job, and gaining new legal and managerial skills.
In 2021, NFS recognized Dan’s “can-do” attitude and his potential for further growth by promoting him to Associate General Counsel. In this new role, Dan has the opportunity to expand his expertise handling commercial and financial transactions, compliance matters, customer workout and bankruptcies, and general corporate matters, while continuing to oversee NFS’ best-in-class litigation services. NFS’ legal team recently added an associate counsel to focus on litigation and Dan was given the task to provide crucial training and mentorship. Such challenge has provided Dan the opportunity to expand on his management skills.
Dan is a resourceful attorney who is always seeking new opportunities and is willing to do whatever it takes to learn, pitch in, and grow professionally. Dan embodies the NFS culture that requires the ability to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced environment while maintaining critical attention to detail. As Dan says, “NFS runs mean and lean. Everyone wears several hats, which provides new opportunities to learn in real-time.”
As noted, Dan is not shy about taking on new challenges and responsibilities, and he is particularly proud to receive the 2020 NFS Operational Excellence Award, which is an acknowledgement by NFS of his commitment to the high standards NFS sets for its employees.
NFS is a fast paced environment, where learning on the fly and being self-motivated are common attributes throughout the company. Dan exemplifies these attributes, and he credits much of his continued success to having the full support and guidance of his team and NFS management. He explained that this caring approach extends to NFS’ customers as well, which is a big part of NFS’ success. Dan has also built a strong network of outside attorneys, whom he can call on for advice, “gut checks,” and to gain additional knowledge.
As Dan reflects on all he has learned so far as part of the NFS legal team, he mentions the value of honesty and transparency. These concepts go hand in hand with his advice to future NFS employees, “Communicate honestly and establish relationships based on trust, both internally and externally with clients and business partners.” In addition to the day-to-day challenges that excite Dan about his career at NFS, Dan also draws inspiration from NFS’ view of its customers, “They are not just numbers on a balance sheet. We look at their character and potential.”
Looking to the future, Dan likes his current role as a mentor, which has encouraged him to look for other managerial and leadership opportunities within the company. NFS is an organization that encourages its employees to take on new tasks and expand their capabilities, as Dan has demonstrated throughout his career at NFS.
In addition to his professional life, Dan enjoys spending time with his family, especially with his wife and two-year-old daughter.
